چکیده

In order to evaluate differences between the results of elemental analysis of glass a proficiency test was carried out during the period 1999/2000. The initial work on this project was presented at the first EAFS Meeting in Lausanne in 1997. Three pairs of glass samples with similar refractive indices had to be examined using refractive index measurements and elemental analysis. In this study SEM-EDX, μXRF, and ICP/MS were used for the elemental analysis. Based on the refractive index measurements a complete differentiation of the glasses was not possible. Annealing of the glass enabled further differentiation. After the use of the elemental techniques a full differentiation of the six glasses was possible. The strategies used by different laboratories in order to discriminate between the samples and the merits of the various techniques applied are discussed.

Evaluation of Transfer Evidence

The question of whether two sets of measurements which constitute evidence come from the same source is one which is frequently sought to be answered by the forensic community. A common type of evidence comes in the form of glass fragments where the refractive index or elemental composition has been measured The most common way of evaluating trace evidence such as glass fragments is the likelih...

Dispersion and Nonlinearity in Ultra-Optical Ga2O3 and TiO2-Bi2O3-PbO Glass Systems

Dispersion, as the characteristic variation of refractive index with wavelength, is more pronounced, where the wavelength is approaching to the absorption band. In ultra-optical glasses, the nonlinear refractive index, concerning to the light intensity dependent phenomenon, becomes considerable. Here, two ultra-optical property glass systems; TiO2-Bi2O3-PbO (TBP...

Forensic discrimination of sheet glass by a refractive-index measurement and elemental analysis with synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence spectrometry.

Measurements of the refractive index (RI) and elemental analysis using synchrotron radiation X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (SR-XRF) were applied to the forensic discrimination of sheet-glass samples from different origins. The refractive index was calculated from the matching temperature at which the glass fragments became invisible in silicone oil. Fragments smaller than 1 mm in maximum diam...

Measuring the temperature dependence of refractive index in water phantom for precise monitoring of the absorbed dose by radiation therapy techniques

In this paper, an experimental setup is used to measure the temperature dependence of the refractive index of a water phantom. In radiation calorimetry by laser beams and interferometric systems, the amount of change induced by radiation within the phantom can be accurately measured. Absorption of dose and the resulted change in temperature changes the refractive index within the material. In o...

Forensic discrimination of sheet glass exposed to high temperature by the determination of trace impurities using ICP-MS.

The effect of heating on the refractive index (RI) and trace elemental compositions of glass was investigated in order to develop an accurate discrimination method of glass fragments exposed to the high temperature of fire on illegal entrance into a crime scene for robbery. Fragments taken from 5 different sheet glasses were subjected to RI measurement and analysis of trace elements using ICP-M...
